Mzumbe Masters League expands to 11 teams as the new season gets underway in Ratanda

The Mzumbe Masters League launched its third season at Obed Nkosi sports ground on March 1, with 11 teams competing and organizers appealing for sponsorship to improve facilities.

The third season of Mzumbe Masters League officially kicked off on March 1, with 11 teams taking to the Obed Sports Ground.

The growing league, which caters for footballers aged 35 and older, has expanded steadily since its launch three years ago.

League coordinator Elvis Mahlangu said the initiative’s vision was to keep experienced players active in the sport they love.

“The league was established with only six teams. We wanted to encourage players over 35 who still have a passion for soccer. Last year, we grew to eight teams when teams from Sky City and Balfour joined, and this season, we have 11 teams participating, which shows the growth and commitment. Matches are played every second Sunday, with five fixtures contested during the opening round,” he said.

Mahlangu also highlighted some of their challenges, particularly the condition of the playing facilities.

“One of our main challenges is that we do not have a suitable pitch. We appeal to local businesses and stakeholders to assist us with sponsorship or any form of support to help improve our facilities and sustain the league,” he said.

Opening match results were as follows:

• Amajita Masters 0-0 Hot Beans Masters

• Madrid Masters 2- 0 Army Gym Masters

• Lizos0-3 Jusca Masters

• Inhliziyo FC 0-0 Heidelberg FC

• Sky City Galaxy 3-1 Abadlali Masters.
