Cambridge FC dominates Goal Getters with convincing 4-1 victory in Bonaero Park

Cambridge FC overcame wet conditions to secure a commanding 4-1 win over Goal Getters, with a strong first-half performance setting the tone for the Hollywoodbets Regional League clash.

Cambridge FC travelled to Bonaero Park on March 22 for their Hollywoodbets Regional League clash against Goal Getters FC, delivering an impressive 4-1 victory despite challenging wet weather conditions.

The Nigel-based side made a strong start, adapting quickly to the slippery pitch and taking control early.

Cambridge opened the scoring just one minute into the game when speedy winger Ntwenhle “Suger” Mabona outpaced the defence, rounded the goalkeeper, and unselfishly set up striker Levaan “Snowwhite” Rose, who tapped in with ease.

Cambridge doubled their lead within five minutes as Mabona once again played a key role, delivering a precise cross that found overlapping left back Njabulo “Messi” Moagi, who headed the ball home to make it 2-0.

The early goals stunned the home side, who struggled to break down a well-organised Cambridge defence.

Although Goal Getters attempted to apply pressure with long balls and created a few chances, they were unable to convert, and Cambridge went into the break leading 2-0.

In the second half, Cambridge appeared to lose some intensity, allowing the hosts to gain momentum.

Goal Getters capitalised on defensive lapses and pulled one goal back in the 60th minute, making it 2-1 and putting the visitors under pressure.

Cambridge responded by making five substitutions, bringing fresh energy and experience into the squad. The changes proved effective as the team regained control and created several scoring opportunities.

In the 75th minute, striker Oupa “Pa” Mbokazi connected with a well-delivered cross across the face of the goal to score Cambridge’s third, restoring their two-goal advantage.

With 10 minutes remaining, Cambridge dominated possession and managed the game well despite the difficult pitch conditions.

The fourth goal came in the final minutes following a swift counter-attack.

Goalkeeper Banele “Casillas” Mthambama initiated the move with a long distribution, finding Philasande “Ox” Yende, who set up Lehlonolo Hlokoloza Motaung to fire home and seal a convincing 4-1 win.

Stand-in captain Banele Bade Mkhwanazi acknowledged the team’s mixed performance.

“We played in phases and it’s a match we should have put to bed in the first half. Our mindset let us down at times, but we will take the points and go back to training to work on the negatives,” he said.

Club chairperson Ignatius Maphike praised the team’s progress but called for greater consistency.

“We are doing well, but we need to be more consistent with our results. We are also calling on local businesses to sponsor or donate to help us participate in the upcoming Easter Tournament, where we are the defending champions. We need to raise R4 000 for affiliation, which will allow us to compete for the R100 000 prize money on offer,” he said.
