Heidelberg Wacky Bowls event raises over R35 000 for animal welfare

A fun-filled day at the Heidelberg Bowling Club turned into a major success story, with the community raising more than R35 000 and vital supplies for the Heidelberg SPCA.

A vibrant display of community spirit and compassion took centre stage at the Heidelberg Bowling Club on May 1, where the Wacky Bowls for Wiggly Tails fundraiser achieved notable success in support of the Heidelberg SPCA.

The event attracted strong participation from local residents, combining sport and philanthropy to support animal welfare. The initiative delivered both an engaging sporting experience and meaningful support for animals in need.

Through the efforts of organiser Liesl Kirstein Jacobs, in collaboration with a network of generous sponsors and community members, the fundraiser raised an impressive R35 575 in cash, along with significant donations of animal food and essential supplies.

Participants were also provided with snacks, lunch, and small tokens of appreciation, which contributed to the inclusive and celebratory atmosphere of the day.

The competition featured mixed pairs and incorporated a creative format with “wacky” ends, adding an element of fun while maintaining a competitive edge throughout the matches.

Werner Schipper, competition secretary at the Heidelberg Bowling Club, said the level of support exceeded expectations.

“This event truly showcased what can be achieved when a community comes together behind a meaningful cause. From the planning stages right through to the final bowl, there was a real sense of unity and purpose,” he said.

The generosity shown by our sponsors, players and volunteers was exceptional, and it translated into tangible support for the animals who need it most. We are incredibly proud not only of the funds and donations raised, but also of the spirit in which the day was enjoyed. It was a reminder that sport can be a powerful platform for positive change, and we look forward to building on this success in future,” added Schipper.
