Cambridge held by Benoni City before falling to Tembisa in demanding league fixtures

Cambridge FC battled through a grueling weekend of back-to-back Hollywoodbets League matches, earning a draw against Benoni City United before suffering defeat to Tembisa Destroyers as they push for a top-five finish.

Cambridge FC endured a demanding weekend of Hollywoodbets League action, collecting one point from a possible six after a hard-fought draw against Benoni City United and a defeat to Tembisa Destroyers.

The Nigel-based side opened their weekend campaign with a trip to Woodlands International College on May 1, where they faced second-placed Benoni City United.

In a match defined by tactical discipline, both teams adopted a measured approach in the early stages, focusing on structured build-up play.

Benoni City created the more threatening early opportunities, with their powerful striker posing a consistent challenge to the Cambridge defence. However, the hosts failed to capitalise, missing a clear one-on-one chance.

Cambridge responded with composure, maintaining possession and creating opportunities through effective wing play, although a lack of clinical finishing kept the score level at 0–0 heading into halftime.

The tempo increased significantly after the break. Cambridge took the lead five minutes into the second half when Levaan ‘Snow White’ Rose completed a well-constructed team move with a composed finish. Benoni City responded within 10 minutes, exploiting space in the penalty area to level the score at 1-1.

The encounter evolved into an open contest, with both sides committing numbers forward. Cambridge regained the advantage through an outstanding individual effort from left-back Njabulo “Messi” Moagi, who navigated past multiple defenders before finding the back of the net to make it 2-1.

However, late controversy proved decisive. In the 87th minute, the referee awarded a penalty to Benoni City following a disputed handball decision.

The hosts converted from the spot to secure a 2–2 draw, denying Cambridge a valuable away victory. Cambridge returned to Nigel on May 2 to host a well-organised Tembisa Destroyers outfit. Playing their second match in as many days, the home side faced a physically demanding challenge against a team also competing strongly in the league.

Tembisa asserted early control, dominating possession and applying sustained pressure in the first half. Despite this, Cambridge’s defensive structure held firm, ensuring the match remained goalless at halftime.

In the second half, the visitors’ attacking intent proved decisive. Tembisa broke the deadlock through a swift counter-attacking move, finishing clinically to take a 1-0 lead.

Cambridge pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but their attacking approach left gaps at the back.

Tembisa capitalised on this vulnerability, adding a second goal from another well-executed counter-attack, converting a low cross at the far post to secure a 2-0 victory.

Club chairperson Ignatius Maphike highlighted the challenges of the fixture schedule and the team’s overall performance.

“Back-to-back matches at this level are always demanding, particularly against quality opposition. The team showed good discipline and fitness, but fine margins made the difference. We will regroup and focus on finishing the season strongly,” he said.
