Cambridge collect four points in Nigel double-header

Cambridge Football Club secured four points from a possible six in a weekend double-header in Nigel on May 16 and 17, battling to a 3-1 comeback win over Joburg City FC before drawing 0-0 with 11 Experience FC.

Cambridge Football Club secured four points from a possible six in a productive weekend double-header played in Nigel on May 16 and 17, highlighted by a 3-1 comeback win over Joburg City FC and a hard-fought goalless draw against 11 Experience FC.

Cambridge produced a determined second-half performance at Jim Fouché Stadium to overturn a 1-0 deficit and defeat Joburg City 3-1 in a return fixture following their narrow first-round loss in Bedfordview.

The home side controlled early possession with composed build-up play, but it was Joburg City who struck first after a defensive lapse midway through the opening half.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 men in dramatic circumstances when a player was shown a red card during goal celebrations.

Cambridge made full use of the numerical advantage after the break, increasing the tempo and applying sustained pressure.

Striker Levaan Rose levelled matters from the penalty spot in the 50th minute after being fouled inside the area.

Momentum remained firmly with the home side as captain Banele Mkwanzi gave Cambridge the lead with a composed finish, before substitute Kamogelo Khama Mokoena sealed the result late on, converting from a well-delivered cross to complete a deserved 3-1 victory.

On May 17, Cambridge were held to a 0-0 draw by 11 Experience FC of Kwa-Thema in a tightly contested encounter.

Both sides created opportunities in an evenly balanced first half, but neither could find a breakthrough.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Cambridge enjoying greater possession and territorial dominance, yet struggling to convert chances in the final third.

Despite sustained attacking pressure, the match ended goalless, with both teams sharing the points.
Head coach Dennis Metsana praised his side’s overall performance, highlighting their improved consistency in double-header fixtures.

“The boys played well, and we are extremely proud of the work done at training, and it showed in these performances. We needed four points from six, especially in double-header weekends where we’ve struggled before. We will continue to work on finishing as we push to close out the season strongly,” he said.
