Gugu and Hlengiwe help eMbalenhle residents shape up
Come for free aerobic exercises at the Sijongile Ndamase Community Hall.
eMBALENHLE – Ms Gugu Motaung had a weight problem and decided to do something about it by attending aerobic classes in Johannesburg.
She began to notice a change in her body and her health and fitness improved after a while.
She attended a number of aerobic, zumba and tae-bo workshops and met Ms Hlengiwe Ntuli.
She wanted to begin an aerobic, zumba and tae-bo project early this year to help people to keep fit.
Ms Ntuli supported the idea and Ms Motaung approached Mr Dennis Masuku from the Department of Sport and Recreation of the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
Mr Yakhani Sondlo, a sports official for the department, was tasked to monitor the project.
Free classes are held at the Sijongile Ndamase Community Hall from Monday to Friday.
Morning classes take place between 9am and 10.30am, children’s classes take place between 3pm and 4pm and adult classes from 4pm to 6.30pm.
Ms Gabi Mahlangu and Mr Linda Masilela are also instructors.
Ms Motaung said being fit and living a healthy lifestyle does not only have to be for those who can afford to spend money on gym memberships.
“Aerobics can help with diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, breast cancer and other related diseases caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.
“People must remember: ‘Prevention is better than a cure’.”
Ms Motaung is pleased that the number of people attending aerobic classes is increasing.
She and Ms Ntuli are planning to introduce water aerobics as well.
“We will appreciate donations of sound systems, aero-steps, rubber dumbbell sets, stomach mats and skipping robes from businesses, stakeholders, the private sector and the community.”
