ERMELO – The NSPCA issued a written warning to Dougie’s Pets and Garden Centre after identifying two animal care concerns during an inspection on August 20.

According to the NSPCA, puppies at the premises did not have access to drinking water when inspectors arrived.

A staff member was instructed to address the issue immediately, and the organisation said it did so on site.

Inspectors also found cleanliness concerns in snake enclosures and one bird enclosure.

The business was instructed to ensure potable water was available to all animals at all times and to thoroughly clean the affected enclosures.

The NSPCA said evidence of compliance was received from the owner Melodie du Toit, the morning after the inspection.

No animals were found to require veterinary treatment and none were removed, with the NSPCA describing the matter as a compliance issue.

The inspection followed a public post by Ban Animal Trading (BAT), which raised broader concerns about conditions at the outlet and the sale of animals.

The NSPCA confirmed that BAT was not present during the inspection. Its formal feedback to Highvelder covered the concerns identified during that inspection and the corrective action taken.

The social media post prompted support for Dougie’s Pets and Garden Centre from members of the Ermelo community.

One resident highlighted the business’s assistance to animals and residents over the years, including helping collect and donate dog food and assisting with lost pets.

Du Toit, acknowledged Highvelder’s enquiry and provided additional images showing the corrective action that was taken.
