Pupils passionate about environment.
Air and water pollution, deforestation, and food security are global concerns and many of these issues often affect people more directly in the developing world.
eMBALENHLE – Pupils from Sizwakele Secondary School will participate in the Environmental Sustainability Project that will be hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) on 1 November in Johannesburg.
The pupils are Louis Mashele (Grade 10),Themba Mahlangu (Grade 9), Zanele Mathebula (Grade 9) and Sesie Simelane (Grade 10).
The project is a schools outreach competition that requires teams of pupils to research an assigned topic related to environmental sustainability and to consider what possible recommendations or solutions they would propose at a local, national, regional and global level.
Mr Butana Tholo, a teacher, said, “This project is about understanding the environment, how it works and how is it helping the community.
“We will be covering different topics such as air pollution and air quality, sustainable development soil, land use and land degradation.
“We have won the first levels which have qualified us to make presentations in Johannesburg.
“We hope to win since the pupils have invested much time to this project.”
If they win in Johannesburg, they will go Australia.
Louis Mashele, the pupil, said: “The projects have not been easy as we had to work even during holidays.
“However, we will work hard to represent our school.
“The environment is our source of life and we therefore ask the community and stakeholders to take charge in sustaining a good environment.”
