Oldest World War 2 veteran dies

Mr Dod Little of Ermelo, believed to have been the oldest surviving World War 2 veteran in South Africa died at the age of 97 at his daughters’ home on Saturday.

Mr Dod Little of Ermelo, believed to have been the oldest surviving World War 2 veteran in South Africa died at the age of 97 at his daughters’ home on Saturday.

“Uncle Dod” as he was affectionately known, was a sergeant in the British Army during the war and was taken prisoner by the German Army.

He managed to escape no fewer than five times  from prisons in Poland but was re-captured each time.

Dod was a member of the MOTHS and regularly attended the annual Remembrance Day wreath-laying ceremonies at the Monte Sole Shell Hole in Ermelo.

A memorial service for Dod will take place on Thursday 21 August at 11.00 in the Methodist Church, Burger Street Ermelo.
