The lights will stay ON

Msukaligwa Municipality has in principle averted the looming interruption of bulk electricity supply that was scheduled for implementation next Friday, 5 June.
The interruption would have seen consumers experience eight hours without electricity daily during the week and six hours over weekends.
In a meeting with Eskom last Friday, municipal management reached a payment agreement with the utility company which they owe R90 950 688.
However, the terms and conditions were not yet available for publishing, as the agreement requires a council resolution on Thursday (today).
Municipal spokesman Mr Mandla Zwane said the municipality has averted the impending power interruption according to a notice recently issued by Eskom.
It was also made clear that, if the municipality should not adhere strictly to the terms of the agreement, power would be cut.
Mr Zwane added that the success of the agreement also depends on consumers paying for their municipal services every month and on time.
“We appeal to those who have already defaulted on their municipal accounts to make arrangements with the municipality,” he said.
Mr Zwane also said the municipality would reward anyone who reported illegal connections where prima facie evidence existed of tampering. The person will be rewarded with R300 for each reported case of tampering.
Such cases can be reported to the Department of Technical Service, electrical section and the caller’s identity will be kept private.
Eskom’s media section confirmed that an agreement had been reached with the municipality, but could not divulge details of the terms and conditions.
With this agreement, Msukaligwa Municipality is a step closer to having their equitable share, to be used for service delivery, released by National Treasury. This was recently withheld due to the municipality’s failure to honour its financial commitments in general and to pay Eskom and other service delivery creditors.
