Police at the Nerston border post between SA and Swaziland have foiled yet another attempt to smuggle dagga into the country.
The Operational Commander at the Nerston Border Police, W/O BJ Claasen said Sgt NE Ndlangamandla was profiling and searching vehicles at sector 1 on Thursday afternoon18 June when he recognized a driver of a Nissan vehicle whom he had previously arrested for dealing in dagga.
Sgt Ndlangamandla’s suspicions were aroused by the faint smell of dagga inside the vehicle and a sniffer dog from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) dog unit was brought in to conduct a search.
The dog reacted positively and indicated to the airbag compartment on passenger side of the vehicle.
Police members then removed the cover and found the airbag was missing but discovered 12 packets of dagga stashed in the compartment. The dagga weighed 2.210kg and has an estimated street value of R3,100.
The vehicle was then thoroughly searched but no more dagga was found.
The driver was arrested and taken to Amsterdam where he was placed in custody.
