Members of the Community Work Programme (CWP) in Breyten exchanged their orange overalls for black dresses, trousers and shirts with orange ribbons and shifted their attention to Intithuko yakwaZanele Disability Centre last Thursday in celebration of Mandela month.
They donated groceries and were also assisted by different stakeholders in making sure it was enough for the centre.
The team’s supervisor, Ms Sibongile Dlamini, said they were also doing their bit to contribute to and participate in Mandela Month.
Other stakeholders included the Government Communications and Information Systems who donated 67 cups to the centre to commemeorate the 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent fighting for democracy.
The CWP is an innovation by government to provide a job safety net for unemployed people of working age. It provides a bridging opportunity for unemployed youth and others who are actively looking for employment opportunities.
The programme provides them with extra cash to support them in their search for full-time or part-time employment. Programme participants do community work, thereby contributing to improvements that benefit all community members.
The programme gives participants a minimum number of regular days of work, typically two days a week, eight days a month, or 100 days a year and provides a predictable income stream. This employment safety net supplements existing livelihood strategies by offering a basic level of income security.
Ms Dlamini thanked everyone that contributed and made the day a successful one.
