Municipality explains tariffs

Further information about municipal tariffs can be found on their website.

In response to the letters “I feel cheated” and “Is this daylight robbery or not?” published in the newspaper on 4 and 18 September respectively, Msukaligwa Municipality responds as follows.

The municipality uses Incline Block Tariffs (IBT) for its consumers. This means prepayment and conventional customers will have the same block tariffs and pay the same price for electricity.

IBTs divide the electricity price into four blocks, where the first block of electricity is at the lowest price. As the customer purchases more electricity during the month, the electricity bought will eventually fall in block two, three or four, which is a bit more expensive.

This process repeats automatically as the customer purchases further electricity to move into block two, three and four. At the end of the month, the history is reset and the customer will again begin in block one on the first day of the new month.

The processes of moving from one block to the next is automatic and depends only on the amount of electricity that is acquired by the customer. The movement to the next block is not at all affected whether the purchases are spread over many transactions or if all the electricity is part of one transaction

Domestic tariffs (up to 20 Amps) as approved by National Electricity regulator of South Africa are as follows:
Block 1 (0-50kWh) R0.80; Block 2 (51-350kWh) R1.20; Block 3 (351-600kWh) R1.398 and Block 4 (>600kWh) R1.608.

Free Basic Electricity (FBE) is also included in the blocks. If a customer is configured to receive FBE, he/she will still receive it, but it will make up the first part of the electricity in the month, therefore the purchase will follow after the free electricity portion.
