Put away the hose-pipe for now

Brummer and Douglas dams are both at 40 per cent capacity currently.

Msukaligwa Local Municipality has implemented water restrictions with effect from last Wednesday.
The watering of gardens by sprinklers or hose-pipes as well as the washing of cars and cleaning of driveways with hose-pipes are prohibited.

According to the municipality, this is due to low water levels at Brummer and Douglas dams which are both at 40 per cent capacity currently.

The municipality is also concerned that despite numerous calls for water conservation, the rate of water usage in Wesselton and Ermelo has not decreased.

The municipality added that they are seeing higher numbers of accounts with water over-use levies.
The municipal move elicited mixed reactions from a number of car wash owners, who spoke to the newspaper on condition of anonymity.

Many of them in Wesselton were not happy with the decision, as the car wash business is their livelihood.
Some wondered whether their only option was to close down their businesses, while others said they understood the current water crisis.

They did, however, say the municipality should also understand their position.
They could not afford to close down their businesses and paid their water accounts.
Municipal spokesman Mr Mandla Zwane said the municipality was trying to devise a strategy to work with car wash owners, but encouraged them to use buckets instead of hose pipes in the meantime.
