The driver of the VW Golf later died in hospital from injuries he sustained.

One person died and eight others suffered injuries ranging from serious to slight in a horror head-on collision between a VW Golf and a VW Minibus near the Ermelo CBD shortly after 22:00 on Saturday night.

The driver of the VW Golf later died in hospital from injuries he sustained A passenger was critically injured. Emergency personnel of the Msukaligwa Fire and Rescue Services, using the jaws of life, had to free both occupants from the wreckage.
Two occupants of a minibus were also seriously injured, while five others suffered cuts and bruises.
The injured were stabilised and treated on the scene by EMT’s of Mpumalanga Emergency Services, ER24 and Life Care Response before being transported to hospital.
The minibus was part of a convoy of vehicles in which family members were travelling back to Middelburg after attending a wedding ceremony in Newcastle.
According the driver of one of the vehicles in the convoy, they had stopped to refuel at a filling station in Kerk Street.
Scarcely 200m after resuming their journey, the VW Golf which was travelling on the wrong side of the road collided head-on with the minibus. The force of the impact entangled the vehicles and breakdown service personnel had to winch them apart.
A case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving is being investigated.
