The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Unit of Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) scooped four awards in the Provincial Kamoso Awards held at the Banquet Hall in Middelburg recently.
GSDM clinched first prizes for best performing institution in the environmental and culture sector, best programme in the environmental and culture sector and best project in the environment and culture sector. They also took second prize in the category for the best innovative project, all which were handed out by the the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Ms Dumisile Nhlengethwa .
The Kamoso Awards were launched in 2007 with projects competing under four sectors: Infrastructure, Environment and Culture, Social and Non-State sectors.
Participating bodies are encouraged to use EPWP principles in the design and implementation of projects, meaning projects must be labour intensive.
EPWP is a government initiative aimed at addressing the high unemployment rates and providing poverty and income relief through temporary work for the unemployed to carry out social useful activities.
