Important notice for firearm owners
The Act determines that the holder of a licence who wishes to renew the licence must at least 90 days before the date of expiry of the licence apply to the Firearms Registrar for its renewal.
Police have issued the following information regarding the renewal of and application for firearm licence in terms of section 24 of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (act 60 of 2000).
The Act determines that the holder of a licence who wishes to renew the licence must at least 90 days before the date of expiry of the licence apply to the Firearms Registrar for its renewal.
The application must be accompanied by the following documents:
– 2 copies of the Identity Document of the holder of the licence;
– 2 testimonial letters;
– A copy of the current competency certificate (front and back);
– 2 colour ID photos;
– Proof of residential address;
– A copy of the training certificate;
– R70-00
The application for renewal of the firearm licence must be handed in to the Designated Firearms Officer responsible for the area in which the applicant ordinarily resides or in which the applicant’s business is.
No application for renewal of a licence may be granted unless the applicant shows that he or she has continued to comply with the requirements for the licence in terms of the Act.
If an application for a renewal of a licence has been lodged within the period provided for in terms of this Act, the licence remains valid until the application is decided.
Validity Period of Licence type or permit
Licence to possess a firearm for self defence: 5 years
Licence to possess a restricted firearm for self-defence: 2 years
Licence to possess firearm for occasional hunting and sport shooting: 10 years
Licence to possess firearm for dedicated hunting and dedicated sport-shooting: 10 years
Licence to possess firearm in private collection: 10 years
Permit to possess ammunition in private collection: 10 years
Licence to possess firearm, and permit to possess ammunition in public collection: 10 years
Licence to possess firearm for business purposes: Business hunting: 5 years
Licence to possess firearm for business purposes: Business other than hunting: 2 years
If a person’s licence to possess a firearm has expired the procedure will be as follows:
The holder of the licence will receive a notice in which he or she may give a representation why the licence should not be cancelled. The notice must be submitted to the Firearms Registrar within 30 days of receiving the notice.
The Registrar will consider the representation and either renew the licence or refuse to renew the licence.
If the renewal is refused, the licence owner has 60 days within which to dispose of the firearm.
