Municipality provides water treatment training

"After completion of the programme, they will have gained skills that will empower and enable them to be employable in the future,"

Msukaligwa Local Municipality has partnered with Mahube Training and Development (MTD) to place 10 unemployed youths on a water and waste water learnership programme within the municipality.

The partnership was initiated by MTD after receiving funding from the Department of Higher Education and Training, because of their good working relations with the municipality they provided the opportunity to the unemployed youth in the municipality.

The students will undergo 10 months’ training where they will have five days of theoretical work and another five days of practical work at the water plants.

The incumbents will receive training in 29 unit standards with 137 total credits after successful completion of training.
Operations manager Mr Phillip Pako said the purpose of the programme was to teach unemployed youths useful skills.

“After completion of the programme, they will have gained skills that will empower and enable them to be employable in the future,” said Mr Pako.

The students will be receiving a stipend from MTD. However, they were informed that the learnership does not guarantee employment by the municipality nor is it an automatic qualification for employment at the municipality.
He also stated that this will assist the municipality in complying with registration of process controllers as required by water legislation and in turn improveservice delivery in the water sector.

The students were upbeat about the opportunity and said they accepted it with both hands and will ensure that they make use of it.

The students were selected from different towns within Msukaligwa after a vigorous selection process by MTD.
