Man drives over sleeping friend

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide, driving while under the influence of alcohol and drinking in public after a motorist drove over his sleeping friend in Thusiville on Saturday afternoon.

Police spokesman for Ermelo, Capt Carla Prinsloo, said the incident occurred at about 17:00 after two friends had been drinking in a vehicle parked outside a residence in Thusiville.

The driver of the vehicle (56) allegedly fell asleep in the vehicle. His 45-year-old friend got out of the vehicle and lay down on the pavement where he allegedly fell asleep.

The driver was woken by bystanders, but drove off over his friend who was sleeping in front of the vehicle.

The friend died on the scene.
