MEC ties the knot
"I carefully followed her activities and noticed that she was a sociable person and after a while we started relating at a distance,"
Mpumalanga MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs Vusi Shongwe married Charmaine Zwane in a two-legged event last Saturday.
The festivities got off to a colorful start at the Shongwes’ residence with the traditional wedding where both families appeared in their traditional outfits, dancing and singing traditional songs.
The bride showered her groom’s family with gifts and a cultural dance group kept the guests entertained as the bride and groom got ready for the white wedding at AJ Swanepoel Stadium.
The couple told the Highvelder how they met. Mr Shongwe said he first laid saw her when she visited her grandmother in KwaZanele, Breyten.
“I carefully followed her activities and noticed that she was a sociable person and after a while we started relating at a distance,” said Mr Shongwe.
It was her walk and face that attracted him and to this day it remains a magnet to him.
Charmaine said she met her husband through a friend.
On numerous occasions she would lie to her mother about being at school for the weekend, when she was actually visiting him.
“I started paying my grandmother a lot of visits in KwaZanele just to see him,” Charmaine said.
What attracted her to him was that he was mature, honest and reliable.
Mr Shongwe commended her for her support in his demanding job that keeps him away from home for long periods.
The couple was blessed with three children. Tragedy struck when their youngest, Sethu (4), passed away after she was knocked down by a speeding driver in Ermelo.
It was one of their daughter’s wishes to see her parents married.
Well-known artist DJ Tira of Afrotainment performed some of his hit tracks and Robby Malinga and Musa Sukwene also performed their hit, Mthande.
