Msukaligwa municipal workers cleaned up the algae off the surface of Pet Dam on 25 September.
Mr Mandla Zwane, spokesman from Msukaligwa Municipality, said the wind played in the favour of municipality workers with the clean-up process.
When the Highvelder visited Pet Dam, plastic and glass bottles floated on top of the surface of the algae.
