About R1 million in damages after alleged arson at Carolina farmer’s property

CAROLINA – A farmer’s barn and some equipment were damaged when a fire swept through it on March 11.

According to Mr Solomon Masango (41), he and his workers knocked off on Friday evening and locked the barn like every other day.

The next morning, he called to inform them that he would be coming in later, and that they should begin with the day’s work. Upon their arrival, they saw smoke emanating from the roof.

Their first thought was that something had caught fire, as the doors were still locked, and hurried to unlock them to extinguish the flames.

A farmer’s barn was allegedly set on fire near Carolina on March 11.

A completely burned out tractor greeted them, and they realised the smoke was coming from a smouldering tractor tyre.

“There was no use to call the fire services as the fire was burned out and the damage had already been done,” a discouraged Mr Masango, who had rushed to the scene, said.

He called the Carolina police, as he suspected that the fire had been caused by troublemakers.
