A viral video has prompted disciplinary action against a Mpumalanga police officer accused of assaulting a woman at the Davel Police Station.

A Mpumalanga police officer is facing disciplinary action after a video allegedly showing him assaulting a female community member at a police station in Davel circulated on social media.

Police management condemned the officer’s alleged conduct, describing it as unlawful and unacceptable.

According to a media statement issued by the office of the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga on Wednesday, August 5, the officer involved has been identified.

Departmental disciplinary processes have since been instituted against the officer.

A Mpumalanga police officer is facing departmental disciplinary action after a video allegedly showing him assaulting a female community member at Davel Police Station circulated on social media.

Police management said it viewed the incident with “concern and dismay” and stressed that the alleged conduct was incompatible with the standards expected of SAPS members.

“Such conduct is unacceptable, unlawful, and goes against the values and code of conduct of the South African Police Service,” the statement read.

Police further emphasised that officers have a responsibility to protect lives, uphold the law and serve communities with integrity and professionalism.

The statement also reaffirmed SAPS’ commitment to combating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

“The SAPS remains committed to the fight against gender-based violence and femicide, and assures the public that the law will take its course without fear or favour,” the statement reads.

Authorities have urged the female community member involved in the incident to open a criminal case so that the matter can be investigated by the relevant department.
