Fire victims express their gratitude to Ermelo residents
The family was unable to salvage their belongings after a blaze destroyed their home on April 8.
WESSELTON – Ms Ntombikaise Nkonyane (52) expressed gratitude to the community for assisting her family after their shack was destroyed in a fire on April 8.
According to her daughter, Ms Sne Nkonyane (26), who was in the house with her four siblings when it burned down, the fire started in one of the rooms.

“Everything happened quickly. I heard a strange noise coming from the roof and thought someone was trying to break in, when I saw the whole place covered in smoke. That is when the fire started to spread,” Ms Nkonyane said.
“My younger brother is still traumatised by the incident. He has not said a word since the night of the fire, which is unusual for him, and he has trouble sleeping at night.”
The Nkonyane family was left without their possessions, which were destroyed in the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause of fire is still unknown.

Various stakeholders, including local churches, contributed donations of school uniforms, blankets and non-perishable food.
“I was at home in KwaZulu-Natal at the time of the incident, and the thought that I could have lost my children in the fire is painful. I am grateful to God for keeping them alive,” Ms Nkonyane said.
