Ermelo street vendor: ‘The municipality must pay me for doing their job’

“I do my best to keep this patch of road in a reasonably good condition for my customers,” she said.

ERMELO – “The roads are f***ed up!” Ms Octavia Nkosi exlaimed when she noticed Highvelder taking pictures of her on April 28.

Ms Nkosi is a street vendor who daily maintains an informal tuck shop behind Checkers in Van Riebeeck Street.

Highvelder spotted her as she collected sand to fill in the potholes in front of her shop just off the main road.

“I do my best to keep this patch of road in a reasonably good condition for my customers,” she said.

Ms Nkosi, a mother of two, said she does whatever she needs to in order to make ends meet.

She once had three children, but her oldest boy passed away several years ago.

She now cares for the remaining two children and said, “I do whatever I can to keep them in school.

“It’s tough, though, school fees are expensive.”
