Family lives in dilapidated RDP house in Wesselton in the face of extreme poverty
According to a Ward 17 councillor, Mr Sandile Cindi, the residents informed him of Mr Maseko's living conditions and he saw the need to offer assistance.
WESSELTON – Dreadful living conditions and a dilapidated RDP house in Phumula, is the reality of Mr Sipho Maseko (63) and his 18-year-old son.
Highvelder paid a visit to Mr Maseko’s house on May 25, and was astounded by the family’s deplorable living conditions.

Mr Maseko used to make a living repairing televisions and working as a mural illustrator, but he was forced to leave his job owing to an unexplained illness, leaving him and his son without a source of income.
According to a Ward 17 councillor, Mr Sandile Cindi, the residents informed him of Mr Maseko’s living conditions and he saw the need to offer assistance.
Mr Cindi came together with Community Work Programme (CWP) workers to clean Mr Maseko’s yard and pleaded for donations in the form of clothes, toiletries and food, from local residents.

“It’s always heart-warming to see the community join together to support a fellow resident,” Mr Cindi said.
He said they had contacted the Department of Social Development as well as Mr Maseko’s family, who had promised to help him but had not yet been to his house.
“I am pleading with the residents and anyone who may be of assistance to come together and donate non-perishable food, school uniforms for Mr Maseko’s son, who’s a pupil at Ithafa Secondary School, toiletries and electricity units. As the ward councillor I cannot do it alone.”
