Eleven arrested in Ermelo for possession of counterfeit money

Police spotted suspicious individuals carrying five bags.

ERMELO – The police arrested 11 Ugandan nationals aged between 25 and 45 on July 4, during Operation Vala Umgodi.

The suspects were found in possession of counterfeit South African currency, amounting to R3m.

While performing their routine duties, some local authorities had observed the individuals carrying five bags in a suspicious manner.

They conducted a search and discovered the counterfeit money.

Further investigation revealed that none of the suspects possessed valid documentation to be in South Africa.

The police are now collaborating with officials of the Department of Home Affairs to verify the suspects’ immigration status.

They have been charged with the possession of counterfeit money and contravening the Immigration Act of South Africa.

The police said additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

The suspects were scheduled to appear in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on July 8.

Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial police commissioner, commended these officers.

“We are really excited by the vigilance displayed by our members. Moving at this pace, we are definitely going to bring the levels of crime to their lowest,” Mkhwanazi said.
