Five nabbed with suspected stolen coal in Ermelo near Goldview mine

Five individuals were arrested near the Goldview mine area on the N11 after being caught with suspected stolen coal.

ERMELO – Five people, aged between 21 and 55, were apprehended during Operation Vala Umgodi on May 2.

The team conducted a stop-and-search operation along the N11 near the Goldview mine area. The suspects were found to be in possession of suspected stolen coal.

“It was during these routine checks that a light truck transporting coal was identified and stopped near Ermelo,” said Captain Mpho Nonyane, a police spokesperson.

Following the discovery, the five occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody and formally charged with possession of suspected stolen coal.

They appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on May 5.

The acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, applauded the officials involved in Operation Vala Umgodi for their steadfast dedication and unwavering commitment to combatting crime in the province.
