Woman caught with large dagga shipment faces multiple charges in Piet Retief

Authorities found hidden cannabis and foiled a bribery attempt during a traffic stop near the Mahamba post.

EMKHONDO – Nqobile Hlophe (36) was remanded in custody by the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on June 2. She faces charges of dealing in dagga, attempted bribery, and contravening the Immigration Act.

The arrest came during a routine patrol by members of Mahamba SAPS along the N2 road on May 31.

According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, officers spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz sedan at about 23:50 with a single occupant travelling from Pongola towards Piet Retief.

“Upon stopping the vehicle and requesting a search, Hlophe allegedly attempted to discourage the officers, claiming there was nothing illegal inside,” Ndubane said.
