Dagga bust worth R400k at Mahamba border post

Police officers uncover 21 hidden dagga rolls during a routine trailer search at Mahamba Port of Entry.

eMKHONDO – Police at the Mahamba Port of Entry arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly dealing in dagga valued at an estimated R400 000 on July 9.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the provincial police spokesperson, police were conducting their normal duties when they stopped and searched an Isuzu bakkie with a trailer.

The suspect had reportedly attempted to conceal his illegal activities by pretending to transport an empty crate from the Kingdom of Eswatini into South Africa.

During the thorough search, police noticed an unusual item hidden beneath the trailer. Upon closer inspection, they discovered 21 rolls of compressed dagga, weighing 61,7kg.

The dagga has an estimated street value of R400,000.

The bakkie and trailer were also seized for further investigation.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on July 10, for dealing in dagga.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi commended the members for their dedication at work.
