62-year-old in custody after firearm bust in Carolina

Police confiscated 13 unlicensed firearms, including three self-manufactured firearms, four rifles, one shotgun, five handguns and six pellet guns.

CAROLINA – Police in Carolina recovered various unlicensed firearms during an intelligence-driven operation that led to the arrest of a 62-year-old man, who was charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on January 13.

Police conducted the operation at a farm in Carolina at about 16:00, during which 13 unlicensed firearms were recovered, including three self-manufactured firearms, four rifles, one shotgun, five handguns and six pellet guns.

Along with the weapons, police seized more than 1 000 rounds of ammunition.

The 62-year-old, Frederick Jakobus Botha, was arrested after he could not give a valid reason for being in possession of the firearms and ammunition.

He appeared in the Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court on January 14.

The case was postponed to January 19 for formal bail application, were he was released on bail of  R20 000.

The case is postponed to April 22 for further investigations
