Suspect in court after alleged threat against Errmelo police officer
A 39-year-old man remains in custody after appearing in the Ermelo Magistrate's Court on charges of intimidation and assault linked to a social media post that allegedly called for a police warrant officer to be attacked and killed.
ERMELO – A 39-year-old man appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court in connection with a social media post that allegedly called for a police warrant officer stationed in Ermelo to be attacked and killed.
According to Colonel Mavela Masondo, provincial police spokesperson, Sifiso Nkosi appeared in court on June 29, facing charges of intimidation and assault.
Masondo said the investigation began after a social media post allegedly calling for an attack on an Ermelo police warrant officer was circulated online.
A case was subsequently opened and investigators identified and traced the suspect.
“During the arrest, Nkosi allegedly resisted and assaulted a police officer before he was taken into custody,” said Masondo.
Police are also investigating the suspect’s possible involvement in a separate intimidation case after another video clip was allegedly posted on social media calling for a police officer to be attacked.
The video followed a recent protest in Ermelo during which police intervened.
The matter was postponed to July 3 for a formal bail application, and the accused remains in custody.
