Illegal dumpsites degrade Ermelo’s appeal

A resident of President Fouché Street told the paper that they see people who dump their rubbish in the wetlands almost daily.

ERMELO – Illegal dumping is getting out of hand, as almost every open veld in town is used as a dumpsite.

At almost every open space and veld in and around Ermelo, heaps of refuse are growing by the day.

After Highvelder’s recent article about the parks in town where rubbish are spread all over with barely any maintenance from Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM), the paper also took a look at all the dumpsites cropping up.

These sites are manifesting themselves not only in town, but also at the entrances to it.

Dumping refuse along the roads and sidewalks in town is degrading the quality of residents’ lifestyle and the town’s overall appeal.

A resident of President Fouché Street told the paper that they see people who dump their rubbish in the wetlands almost daily.

“This is very concerning as the waste is not only a breeding place for pests, but is harmful to the environment.”

She added that people with trolleys are regularly seen with saws, cutting down branches, and raised her concerns about the impact of this on the wetlands.

“Some of the people I spoke to and asked to stop cutting down the trees, were very aggressive, but if everyone is just going to keep on cutting down, what will be left of the place?”

At the open veld in Border Street, various heaps of empty cough syrup bottles were seen, as well as building waste.
