Gert Sibande District mayor urges locals to maintain positivity concerning water

The mayor provided an update on the construction of a police station in Dundonald, stating that the project is now moving forward again after being put on hold in August last year as a result of a legal challenge launched by AfriForum to the government's supply chain processes.

EMPULUZI – Walter Mngomezulu, executive mayor of the Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM), has urged the people of eMpuluzi in the Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality (CALM), to maintain a sense of optimism as bulk potable water will soon flow in the area again.

Mngomezulu made this statement in his address during the Mayoral Imbizo at the Glenmore Sports Ground on March 17.

The imbizo was aimed at engaging residents from Mayflower, Dundonald, Glenmore and surrounding areas on the progress of the various service delivery projects that the GSDM is implementing in the area.

Mngomezulu reported that the Mayflower Water Treatment Works, which is funded by the Department of Water and Sanitation and implemented by the GSDM, was almost complete.

Represented by Bheki Buthelezi, member of the mayoral committee for planning, economic development and innovation, GSDM also paid a visit to Sinqobile near Dundonald in the Chief Albert Luthuli municipal area, where 20 bags of 40kg grower feed were handed over to a small-scale farmer, Andries Masina. Only 1% of the work remains, which is the testing of the system and commissioning of the plant, which has been upgraded from 2.5ML per day to 10ML.

The Dundonald booster pump station was upgraded from two to four pumps.

The GSDM also undertook to increase the storage capacity by installing two raised steel tank reservoirs to ensure there is enough supply of bulk potable water in the area.

The mayor provided an update on the construction of a police station in Dundonald, stating that the project is now moving forward again after being put on hold in August last year as a result of a legal challenge launched by AfriForum to the government’s supply chain processes.

He thanked and commended the Mpisikazi Traditional Council and the Department of Land Affairs for availing the piece of land for the construction of the police station.

“While this issue of police stations is not our competency, we have, however, taken it upon ourselves as responsible public representatives to engage with the SAPS management. This was also done in line with our District Development Model strategy, and we shall continue to monitor it until our communities receive these essential services,” Mngomezulu said.
