Water woes in Ermelo: MP writes to deputy president for urgent intervention
In his letter to the deputy president, Kruger outlined the dire state of water infrastructure and supply in Ermelo and surrounding areas.
ERMELO – With November 8 marked as “Day Zero” for Msukaligwa Municipality, the Democratic Alliance’s constituency head of Msukaligwa, Henro Kruger has formally appealed to the deputy president, Paul Mashatile, for urgent intervention to address the area’s severe water crisis.
In his letter, Kruger outlined the dire state of water infrastructure and supply in Ermelo and surrounding areas, emphasising that local reservoirs are at critically low levels and that taps could soon run dry for thousands of residents.
Kruger expressed his concern over the impact this situation is already having on residents’ health, daily lives, and the local economy.
“I write to urgently bring to your attention Msukaligwa’s looming water crisis,” Kruger stated, highlighting that residents have resorted to using untested alternative water sources. Aware of the associated health risks, they have no other choice as access to clean water diminishes.
To combat the crisis, Kruger proposed immediate actions, including:
- Declaring Msukaligwa a disaster area to unlock essential resources and emergency support.
- Emergency water supply arrangements through tankers and alternative sources to ensure immediate relief for the most affected areas.
- Accelerated infrastructure repairs and upgrades to reduce leakage and wastage within the municipal water system.
- Public education on water conservation to help residents prolong remaining resources and practice responsible water use.
