High turbidity at water treatment works in Carolina
Recent heavy rainfall has led to elevated turbidity levels in the local water treatment works.

CAROLINA – The recent heavy rainfall has led to elevated turbidity levels in the local water treatment works.
Turbidity refers to the cloudiness of water caused by suspended particles like silt and sediment.
Thapelo Phetla, the spokesperson for Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality, said while turbidity itself is not typically harmful, it can interfere with water treatment processes, potentially reducing the effectiveness of disinfection and increasing the risk of waterborne contaminants.

As a precautionary measure, the municipality has issued a boil water advisory for all residents until further notice.
“All water used for drinking, cooking, washing food and brushing teeth should be boilt for at least one minute before consumption,” Phetla said.
Increased run-off from the heavy rainfall has introduced higher levels of particles into the water supply, straining the filtration systems.
“Our team is actively monitoring and addressing turbidity levels by enhancing filtration processes in the water treatment works. Additionally water quality tests are being conducted to ensure compliance with safety standards,” he concluded.
The municipality said it appreciates the public’s co-operation and understanding as they work to restore water quality and ensure the community’s safety.
