Road deterioration pushes Ermelo residents to take matters in own hands

The truck drivers came to a standstill at the intersection of Kerk and Oosthuizen streets, causing chaos in town.

ERMELO – After frustrated business owners and their employees in Havenga Road took matters into their own hands, closing down the road on January 17 in protest against its deteriorating state, their demands were not met and they again shut down the road on January 23.

This time the group of people diverted truck drivers through town, down Kerk Street.

The closure of the road, which caused significant traffic disruptions, was intended to force a meeting with the Msukaligwa Local Municipality.

Intervention from the police assisted the group in arranging a meeting with the Msukaligwa Local Municipality’s mayor, Mapulane Nkosi.

Nkosi first said she would meet the concerned citizens at the intersection, but they later called for the meeting at the municipality.

After numerous issues concerning the number of attendees, and who may attend the meeting and who not, the meeting commenced and the members raised their concerns.

During the meeting, the municipality told the members they had scheduled a meeting with all the stakeholders on January 27, in which they will discuss options available to improve the road conditions.
