MEC pays oversight visit to bridge repair site
Collapsed bridge, broken promises: Residents of Carolina/Breyten are paying a price for government inaction.

CAROLINA – The MEC for public works, roads and transport in Mpumalanga, Thulasizwe Thomo, conducted an oversight visit to the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality on March 6 to inspect the repairs being conducted on the collapsed bridge on the P177 between the town and Chrissiesmeer.
The bridge, which collapsed on December 28, has caused significant disruptions to the residents, affecting access to essential services, schools and businesses.
The traffic has been rerouted via the Carolina/Breyten road, but motorists have raised concerns about the poor condition of the alternative route which is said to be riddled with potholes and extends travel time.
During the visit, Thomo expressed his concern over the delays in the reconstruction of the bridge and called for urgent action to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe. He emphasised the impact of the delays on daily life and assured residents that their concerns were being prioritised.

Thomo also committed to working closely with the municipality, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure the bridge is rebuilt as soon as possible.
