DA wants government to do away with blue light brigades

MPUMALANGA – The Mpumalanga DA urged the provincial government to outlaw the use of what it deemed the unnecessary, expensive and dangerous blue light brigades, which transport politicians and VIPs.

The DA recently submitted a motion to the Mpumalanga Legislature requesting that the house declare blue light brigades illegal. This motion was brought about by a recent incident in which Warrant Officer Thomas Shongwe (56), a bodyguard for Deputy President David Mabuza, died on November 20, when Mabuza’s convoy was involved in an accident near Middelburg.

Bosman Grobler, the Mpumalanga DA’s chairperson, said, “Sadly, the ANC’s fat cats defeated the DA’s motion, showing once again that they have no qualms about wasting tax payers’ money and don’t care about the lives of other drivers on the road.”

The Automobile Association of South Africa denounced blue light brigades used by Presidential Protection Services in April, saying that they pose a threat to other drivers and continue to endanger the safety of other drivers, including the VIP convoys’ passengers.
