Informal tyre trade in Ermelo a bustling hustle

To check for any leaks, they've come up with a makeshift dunking tank.

ERMELO – If you’ve ever driven past the R39 and N17 intersection, right across from the Gert Sibande District Municipality, chances are you’ve noticed the stack of tyres on the corner.

The spot is always a hive of activity, where a variety of informal businesses thrive.

You might find locals selling fresh fruit and vegetables or tempting passers-by with mielies roasted over an open flame. However, it’s the informal tyre trade that really thrives in this area.

You’ll find Tony Mons and Marito Afonso here, hustling on the side of the road, buying second-hand tyres and carrying out quick repairs.

They’ve set up a no-frills operation to which people bring their used tyres in exchange for a quick buck.

To check for any leaks, they’ve come up with a makeshift dunking tank.

They dug a hole in the ground and filled it with water, and when potential customers swing by to get their tyres fixed, they simply drop them in. If there’s a leak, they plug it up.

Next time you’re cruising through Ermelo, give a shout-out to Mons and Afonso.

These guys may not have fancy titles or degrees, but they sure know how to turn a hustle into a steady income to support their families.
