“The people on the street are freezing” – Lighthouse Centre in need of donations

The centre is in desperate need of warm clothing, blankets and shoes, as many clients are wearing sandals or going barefoot.

ERMELO – With winter’s sudden arrival, the Lighthouse Centre in town is in need of the community’s help with warm clothing and shoes.

According to Yzelle Swart, the centre’s manager, they spent most of the day on June 4 helping their freezing clients to warm up.

“We were giving out warm jackets, coats, socks, scarves, beanies and shoes as we received them. The people on the street are freezing,” Swart said.

She emphasised that the centre is in desperate need of warm clothing, blankets and shoes, as many clients are wearing sandals or going barefoot.

During the winter days, they also give out hot tea to the clients.

“They are shaking by the time they reach the Lighthouse, and we try our best to help them warm up with what we have available.”

Making a difference in the town’s vulnerable people’s lives was the Lighthouse’s mission since it opened its doors in September 2021. With more than 200 people on its beneficiary list, the centre needs the communities help to make winter a little warmer for them.

During Highvelder’s time spent at the Lighthouse, the paper heard the heartfelt stories of individuals who have found themselves on the streets. These circumstances often arise from a lack of alternatives rather than substance abuse.

Many individuals seek refuge on the streets as an escape from their difficult realities at home.

Any donations you can contribute will be immensely appreciated and will go a long way in supporting Ermelo Lighthouse’s vital work.
