Msukaligwa calls for strict enforcement of by-laws with prepaid meter upgrades

Mandla Zwane, the municipal spokesperson, provided an update on the project's current status.

In an effort to enhance service delivery and streamline energy management, the Msukaligwa Local Municipality continues to make strides in its Token Identifier (TID) Rollover Project, aimed at updating the prepaid meters in town.

Mandla Zwane, the municipal spokesperson, provided an update on the project’s current status.

As of May 2024, significant progress has been made with the successful completion of audits across various neighborhoods.

Out of a total of 27 949 audits conducted, 11 871 audits resulted in:

  • Successful updates with TID: 11 871
  • Successful updates without TID: 1 865
  • Audits could not be completed due to various reasons: 7 805

Unsuccessful audits were due to reasons such as address complications, customer unavailability and meter access issues.

“While the municipality has seen co-operative efforts from many residents, challenges persist. There has been notable resistance in some areas, evidenced by instances of tampering with meters during field operations.”

Zwane emphasised the need for strict enforcement of existing by-laws and penalties to deter such actions and ensure revenue recovery.
