UPDATE: Woman dies after being doused in flammable liquid and set alight

The neighbours did their best to extinguish the fire and the woman was taken to hospital for medical treatment

CAROLINA – A 22-year-old woman, who had been fighting for her life in the hospital after allegedly being set on fire by her boyfriend, died on August 26.

The suspect, Innocent Sthembiso Maseko appeared in the Carolina Magistrate’s Court on August 26 August and the case was postponed to September 4 for formal bail application.

According to Colonel Donald Mdhluli, a provincial police spokesperson, the suspect poured flammable liquid on the woman and set her alight, before members of the community came to her aid.

The neighbours saw her in agony, engulfed in flames, while the man was still busy pouring liquid from a two-litre container on her.

When he realised that people were coming to her rescue, he fled the scene.

“The neighbours did their best to extinguish the fire and the woman was taken to hospital for medical treatment,” said Mdhluli.

Sthembiso Spoto Maseko, was apprehended on the same day and appeared in court on August 22, facing charges of attempted murder, where the case was postponed to August 26.
