VIDEO – Msukaligwa Local Municipality demolishes illegal street vendors in Ermelo

Questions have been raised after some vendors who claim they have permits to operate their businesses were also removed by the municipality.

ERMELO – Msukaligwa Local Municipality demolished illegal street vendors’ structures on De Jager Street on September 10.

According to one of the women who had a hairdresser stand, they received notice from the municipality but were not informed of the date by which they needed to vacate their stands.

Municipal workers arrived at the scene with a backhoe/back actor to demolish the illegal structures.

“I asked the workers if I could have someone help me take down the shack I was working in, but they refused and demolished it,” she told the newspaper.

The Highvelder received information from a concerned family member of one of the individuals whose business was demolished, expressing their frustrations regarding the situation.

According to him, his cousin had a permit to operate her business at that location.

“What amazes me is that there are still stalls there without a permit to operate,” the family member said.

The Highvelder briefly spoke to Mandla Zwane, spokesperson for Msukaligwa Local Municipality, who confirmed that the municipality removed illegal structures.

The newspaper has sent further inquiries to Zwane and awaits his response.
