Man drowns while fishing near Chrissiesmeer
Police are investigating an inquest following the drowning of 39-year-old, who disappeared beneath the surface of Kwa-Chibikhulu Dam.
CHRISSIESMEER – Police are investigating an inquest after a 39-year-old man drowned at Kwa-Chibikhulu Dam near Chrissiesmeer on January 25.
The deceased has been identified by witnesses as Skhumbuzo Sam Magagula.
According to Constable Nombuso Khubeka, the incident occurred at around 15:20 while a group of people were fishing at the dam.
It was reported that Magagula entered the water in an attempt to retrieve a fishing rope.
The SAPS diving unit arrived at the dam on January 26 to conduct a search operation.
Divers managed to find and retrieve the body about one metre below the surface of the water.
The acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, has issued a stern warning to the community to remain extremely vigilant around dams.
