District mayor sends condolences after R39 fatal crash

Authorities urge caution on roads after fatal R39 collision sparks renewed safety concerns in Mpumalanga region.

The Gert Sibande District Municipality has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic head-on collision on the R39 Road between Standerton and Morgenzon on May 21.

The accident between a minibus taxi and a bus claimed 10 lives, all occupants of the taxi, including the driver.

According to reports, eight people died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being transported to hospital.

The accident occurred in the early morning hours under misty conditions, which may have reduced visibility.

District executive mayor Walter Mngomezulu conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families affected and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

He further emphasised the importance of responsible driving behaviour and renewed calls for stricter adherence to road safety regulations across the district.

Authorities have urged road users to exercise caution, especially during low-visibility travel conditions.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
