Police and security maintain order as small community gathering takes place in Ermelo

Police and private security maintained a visible presence as a small community gathering took place without any major incidents in Ermelo.

A small group of community members gathered near the traffic circle at the intersection of De Jager and Naudé Streets in Ermelo shortly before 10:00 this morning, the same location where a much larger March and March demonstration was staged on June 10.

According to community members on the scene, the gathering was intended as a community meeting rather than a march.

Although a few minor altercations occurred, one man was taken into police custody after being escorted to officers by community members.

Those at the scene said the individual is a foreign national, although this could not be independently verified at the time of publication.

The gathering in Ermelo forms part of a broader wave of coordinated demonstrations taking place across South Africa today, linked to the national “March and March” mobilisation.

Law enforcement agencies across multiple provinces have confirmed heightened deployments in anticipation of protest action, with Public Order Policing units, traffic officials and private security companies activated in identified hotspot areas.

The national action has been associated with calls for stricter enforcement of immigration laws and the removal of undocumented foreign nationals, although government has stated that only official authorities are mandated to enforce immigration policy.

Police have urged participants and members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information as authorities monitor gatherings in several major centres.

Local police, assisted by several private security companies, maintained a strong presence throughout the Ermelo gathering, and no major incidents had been reported at the time of publication.
