Build by the rules

A responsible municipality would launch a proper investigation into premises where structures obviously not in line with building regulations have been erected.

Concerned reader, Ermelo:

I congratulate the Highvelder on exposing at least one instance of building regulations being flouted in Ermelo (Official in hot water, 11 September).

There must be many more such cases that should be investigated.

I cannot believe that a building inspector approves plans for so many stands with just one house and outbuilding on it to suddenly sprout a mini-complex of sub-standard dwellings squashed into the little space available.

Do these home-owners always submit applications for rezoning and plans for these extensions?

Are proper electrical and plumbing connections done and inspected by the responsible municipal official(s)?

Municipal by-laws used to forbid more than one dwelling on a stand, but nowadays multiple structures have become the norm.

The driving force behind this is, of course, that everybody wants to make a quick buck, but should this be allowed at the expense of the safety, hygiene and appearance of a town that once was known as “the jewel of the Highveld”?

A responsible municipality would launch a proper investigation into premises where structures obviously not in line with building regulations have been erected.

It’s not difficult to identify problem areas – a simple drive through Ermelo will reveal them.

Or is it a question of authorities simply turning a blind eye?
