Bad start to 2018/2019 season continues for local sides in SAB Soccer League

Locals teams continued their bad run in the beginning of the season and will be able to lick their wounds as they take a break from the season this coming weekend with the Nedbank Cup taking place.

Various soccer teams from the Gert Sibande District once again did battle in the SAB Soccer at stadiums around the district on the 6 October weekend.

Local outfits piled pressure on themselves as they continued a dismal start to the 2018/2019 season.

Altogether four of the five local teams failed to register maximum points with only VOC United triumphant.

VOC United managed a scrappy 1 – 0 win over newcomers, Passion FC from Carolina, at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium last Saturday.

Ermelo United was not so fortunate, going down 2 – 1 to a Manzana FC team that is on a winning run.

The SunCity Gunners could not hold back a rampant Shooters FC side who lived up to their name as they they put three goals past the local keeper.

The locals had no response to a lethal Shooters attack and the match ended 3 – 0.

The much anticipated Ermelo derby between Mafia FC and Mpumalanga Eagles FC did not live up to expectations, ending in a 1 – 1 draw at the Mpumalanga Stadium last Sunday.

In other matches, defending champions Somhlolo FC finally managed to get a point on the log table with a 2 – 2 draw against Typhoon.

Breyten United continued their winning ways by beating Hammers FC 3 – 2 and PR Barcelona rounded off the weekend’s matches with a 1 – 0 win over XI Experience.

Locals teams continued their bad run in the beginning of the season and will be able to lick their wounds as they take a break from the season this coming weekend with the Nedbank Cup taking place.

Teams will come back on Sunday, 21 October and once again Mpumalanga Eagles FC will take part in another Ermelo derby when they face a SunCity Gunners line-up who are on a losing streak.

VOC United take on Manzana FC, who are on a high with back-to-back wins, however, the locals will be boosted by their win over the weekend.

Mafia FC will travel to Piet Retief to play against Flymingo United at the Kantombazana Grounds.
