6 tips to get your pets through an extreme heat wave

As summer temperatures pet owners are urged to spare a thought for their fur-babies who also struggle with the heat. Here are some tips to help your pet cope with soaring temperatures.

Access to water

Make sure your pets have easy access to clean, fresh, cool water at all times.  The water bowls should be left in the shade and out of direct sun which will just accelerate evaporation.  It’s also a good idea to increase the number of water bowls according to the number of pets you have and provide containers that suit your pet’s behaviourial habits.  If they like to play in their water bowls, opt for bigger, sturdier containers that can’t be knocked over. If you’re going to be away from home for long periods, ensure there is enough water available to your pets for the entire time you are away. Ice cubes can also be supplied to cool and hydrate your pets.

Access to shade

Having some shade for pets to escape the sun’s UV rays is a huge bonus. Consider the type of shade available for your pet.  A kennel in direct sunlight may well provide shade from the sun but it will have a sauna effect inside because of its poor ventilation. It is advisable to move kennels under shady trees or sheltered areas.

No parked cars

If you pet is travelling in the car with you, make sure the vehicle is adequately cooled and entilated. Stop often so that they can stretch their legs and drink water. Never leave your pets inside a parked car, even with the windows slightly open.  Temperatures inside parked vehicles can soar to dangerous levels very quickly

Actively cool your pet

Be aware of the warning signs of overheating such as heavy panting, glazed or bloodshot eyes, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, fever, dizziness, restlessness, excessive thirst or profuse salivation.  Consult your vet if you’re worried about your pet’s symptoms.

If you see your pet is suffering from extreme heat, move them to the shade or allow them inside. Cool them down by applying cooled towels or ice packs to their head, neck, chest and belly.  Get creative in cooling your pet down.  Homemade pet-friendly ice lollies can also assist in cooling your pet down from the inside

Don’t get scissor happy

Although it is tempting to give your pets a haircut in the warmer months some experts advise that you may be removing their natural temperature regulator.

Not only does their fur protect them from sun burn, insect bites and dehydration, the different layers also play a role in keeping them warm in the cold and cooling them down in the heat.
